This past week was the Premiere of Stage 2 of the Overwatch League and some big changes came to the field. Players have changed teams and maps have switched up , but probably the biggest thing that affected this past week in stage 2 was the that patch 184.108.40.206 was live in the league. If you were wondering what this patch did it was a really big nerf to Mercy. Mercy who seemed like was in every single match and almost had to be picked due to her resurrect ability which was enhanced by her ultimate form, giving her another charge and also giving her instant resurrect. Well with patch 220.127.116.11 that was all thrown out the window. Mercy can no longer instant resurrect and she does not get a bonus charge and her ultimate was cut in time as well.(if you want to check out the details check out the Overwatch patch notes). A lot of expectations were that there was going to be a completely new meta with mercy gone and that she was useless and that the pros would not play her any more. Well that was not 100% the case while most teams did opt for a different support in almost every match we did see mercy being played,(Dallas Fuel playing her most) however it was mostly on defense and then when that player was killed was switched to one of the other supports, mostly between Ana and Lucio which saw the most play.
Zenyatta the ball throwing omnic monk was the support in the spotlight getting played by every team in every match. However there really didn’t seem like a new meta had broken out on any team with one strategy out right steamrolling. If anything the teams almost seemed lost not knowing exactly what would work which made for great viewing. There was constant switching with the supports some teams even opting out of the traditional support and switching for a Sombra, who got more play time this last week then all of stage one, with her hacking med packs.
Week 1 Outcome
The top teams to come out this week were Philadelphia Fusion which came out strong this stage not dropping a single map this week and picking up 2 wins. Also Seoul Dynasty, Dallas Fuel and Houston Outlaws picking up two wins with a strong first week. It seemed as though Shanghai Dragons, the team that had no wins in the first stage, had improved however they could just not clench a victory this week along with Florida Mayhem, San Francisco Shock, Boston Uprising.
